The room is not the count. The room is the composition.
Marina Middleton runs Create & Cultivate. Last week she published eight rules for women-focused events, and the sharpest one reads like housekeeping. She calls the name-badge cocktail hour one of the least effective things the events industry has ever produced.
That is not a complaint about networking. It is a complaint about measurement. A badge in a room is an attendance number. What she reports instead are outcome numbers: by her account, 459 attendees connected with hiring managers and 303 founders connected with investors.
Those are not the same kind of figure, and the difference is the whole argument. Most post-event reports tell you how many people came. Very few tell you who left with something they did not have that morning. The first number is easy to produce and easy to grow. The second one is harder, and it is the one a sponsor renews on.
The room is not the count. The room is the composition.
