The smaller room sells relevance.
Etsy's first festival activation was not Coachella. It was Daisy Chain Fields, a first year, one day, all female festival in Irvine with roughly 45,000 people in it, built around an Olivia Rodrigo audience and, per BizBash, a $20 million fundraising goal for charities supporting women and girls. Etsy built a Creative Village around a working bead fountain, chain stitch embroidery, junk journal making, and sellers on site who had co-designed the official collection. Daniel Montalto, VP of brand marketing at Etsy, told BizBash that you cannot manufacture community, and that brands should start with what people already care about. That line reads soft. It is the hardest operating constraint in experiential. A first year festival has no legacy sponsor stack to outbid, an audience with one reason to be there, and a founding story a brand can sit inside rather than interrupt. The giants sell scale. The smaller room sells relevance.
