In the Wild

The one thing a photograph cannot sell.

Cathay Pacific turned eighty this year and built a room where you can sit in the seat.

BizBash reported on October 5 that the airline ran an anniversary pop-up at The Grove in Los Angeles from September 24 to 26, after a VIP preview the evening before, and that it moves to Hudson Yards in New York from October 8 to 10. Inside are the new Aria Suite business class seat and the premium economy seat, which BizBash describes as their first North American showcase outside an aircraft. There are archival uniforms made with Hermès, Balmain and Nina Ricci, and boarding passes handed out at the door.

A premium cabin seat is the most expensive thing an airline sells and close to the only one people buy without trying it first. The anniversary is what bought the permission to put one in a shopping center.

Eighty years of heritage, spent on the one thing a photograph cannot sell.
